RESHORING INITIATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACTIVITIES
1. Reshoring Trend:
Final 2015 reshoring data will be available in February. Preliminarily, fewer jobs were reshored than in 2014. Foreign Direct Investment continued strong. The sum of the two is projected to be down about 8% from 2014 but should still approximately equal new offshoring.
a. Reshoring’s share of manufacturing job growth since Feb. 2010: Job growth: ≈870,000 Reshored plus FDI jobs added: ≈240,000 Reshoring plus FDI % of total: ≈28% b. Number of reshoring plus FDI companies added to the list in 2015: 250
2. Reshoring Initiative: a. Highlights: 1) Developed Resources for Retail Suppliers site, linked from Walmart’s JUMP site. 35 trade associations, Commerce Dept. offices, banks and companies volunteered to help suppliers reshore. 2) Started a search for grants from foundations. Sending out 10 to 20 Letters of Inquiry at the end of 2015 and early 2016. 3) Launched a Reshoring Infographic that is customizable. 38 total (17 national, 7 industry, 7 state, 7 other customized) infographics were placed in in 23 media. 4) Explored expanding to include reshoring of technology services/software outsourcing. Had a meaningful discussion with industry leaders but failed to attract enough support to proceed. 5) Established an especially strong cooperation with sponsor NMA (National Mining Association: joint op-ed in Industry Week, op-ed in the Detroit News, video, “media tour” interviews on 15 radio stations (15.5 million listeners). Good model for providing benefit to other high-level sponsors. 6) Added to the website a Library of Related Categories with articles on Consumer Preference, Economic Impacts, Green, How to Reshore, Reshoring Surveys, and Risks of Offshoring. b. Communication 1) Presentations, TV, radio, webinars, etc.: 96 including 4 by Sandy Montalbano. 2) Newsletter distributed: 6 times. 3) Library: a) Total redesign implemented. Our reshoring and FDI data is now much more accurate. b) Article count: 3,088 up from about 1,800 as of 12/31/14. 4) Website completely revised. 5) Demonstrated the international relevance of our tools and logic: a) Presented at: the National Manufacturing Debate at Cranfield University in the UK; to FEC (the European cookware manufacturers) in Brussels; and to 25TH Supply Chain Forum, Kedge Business School in Bordeaux, France b) Consulting on reshoring with Deloitte in Quebec c) Interviewed on the Korean Broadcasting System TV. d) TCO Estimator revised to kg and Sterling operating on the Cranfield University website. 6) Online comments posted with links to the website: 150 7) Social Media a) Reshoring Initiative LinkedIn Group: 1,390 members, up 20% from 12/31/14 b) LinkedIn postings: about 465. c) Twitter: tweets 1,168, followers: @Reshoring Initiative 2168, @HarryMoser 1,648 @SandyMontalbano 1,092 8) Published articles written by the Initiative: 13 9) Quoted in 207 articles. Aired on 21 radio and 8 TV programs 10) Website traffic: up 1.4%, 32,572 unique visitors 11) Posted ppt deck with slides on 358 company cases of reshoring. 12) Updated the reshoring white paper in a document the International Economic Policy Group will present to the 2016 Presidential candidates 13) Exhibited at: a) MFG Meeting 2015 b) Walmart’s U.S. Manufacturing Summit in Bentonville c) U.S. Commerce Dept.’s SelectUSA Summit in DC d) AMT Forecasting and Marketing Conference, Cleveland e) FABTECH in Chicago. Including book signing. f) Methods Machine Tool in Sudbury, MA 14) Mfg. Day: Harry spoke at NEPIRC (an MEP) in Penn. Sandy spoke at Rodon in Penn. c. Economic Development, Consulting and Advising 1) Implementation of our Economic Development Program: a) Actively working with Miss. State Univ. in U.S. funded Make it in America Challenge. b) Actively working with the PA MEP system under the same U.S. program. 2) Consulting contract with Walmart 4) On Advisory Board of CFIRE (National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education) project on the impact of reshoring on the U.S. transportation infrastructure. 5) Consulting with IEDC (International Economic Development Council) d.
