WJCC school division looks at college and technical career education options

The 2025 Reshoring Survey found that manufacturers recognize that successful reshoring efforts rely on increasing the number of skilled workers. The Department of Labor is encouraged to promote career pathways alongside college, since those completing apprenticeships often earn as much as college graduates but without accumulating student debt. Additionally, state and local governments are urged to revive high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs by strengthening partnerships with community training organizations.

The Williamsburg-James City County school system is dedicated to increasing career and technical training options for students. Recently, the district held a screening of Multiple Choice, a documentary highlighting the importance of blending academic learning with career-oriented education. This film, produced by William & Mary graduate Ted Dintersmith, featured how Winchester County Public Schools turned one of its elementary schools into a career and technical education center.

According to Superintendent Daniel Keever, Winchester’s achievements represent an “ideal scenario” for WJCC Schools. He aspires to establish a dedicated career and technical education center. Although the division currently provides Career Technical Education (CTE) courses and collaborates with a regional education center, Keever aims to further expand the array of options available to students.

The overarching goal is to support every student in identifying a suitable post-graduation pathway—be it trade school, college, or military service. Keever emphasized his intention to enhance the range of opportunities offered by WJCC to ensure all students can pursue their chosen careers successfully.
